The popular Jumeirah Beach Residence area runs to the front of Dubai Marina and has long since been a favoured holiday and residential destination for expats visiting and moving to Dubai, most notably for its stunning seafront.
Whilst there are an abundance of hotels dotted along what is affectionately known as JBR, finding a room with that all-important sea view is not as easy as it first seems. The Movenpick Jumeirah Beach is one of five Movenpick properties in Dubai and whilst each offers differing locales and facilities, the Jumeriah beach property remains the only one with views towards the Arabian Gulf.
Located on the ‘right end’ of The Walk – and by this we mean the end with less traffic – the Movenpick Jumeirah Beach boasts an enviable location nestled among many of Dubai’s most coveted bars, restaurants and shops and even the UAE’s first outdoor cinema. In fact, there is so much to do right on this modern hotel’s doorstep that it might just be one of the best locations in the city, suitable for both families and couples alike.
This property stays true to the Swiss Movenpick brand and features contemporary chic interiors in an imposing 5-star modern hotel tower. With 294 rooms (each with balconies that have views towards the Arabian Gulf or the cityscape), the Movenpick is not the largest or even the smallest of Dubai hotels, meaning there is a category of room to suit everyone. From Superior Rooms with a choice of king or twin beds to Executive Rooms with lounge access, right through to the Executive Suites and the lavish, top-floor Royal Suite, each category possesses neutral decor, well thought out furnishings and complimentary Wi-Fi as standard.
I want to talk a little more about the Executive Suites. At 70sqm, this beautifully appointed suite is more than ample accommodation space for two, three or even four people with a large living area, kitchen, separate bedroom with focal king sized bed and vast bathroom. Shades of beige form the decor which is accented by hints of Arabian gold and deep, plush purple furnishings creating an overall regal effect, set off by ambient mood lighting. Dark mahogany furniture works in perfect contrast to modern chrome touches and delicate ornaments. There is a small kitchen and bar area framed by an oversized arc lamp where you’re supplied with the standard teas and coffees but which also comes in handy as a serving space for the excellent in-room dining. The large L-shaped sofa that takes pride of place in the living area makes for a great place to relax in front of one of two large LCD TVs after a day spent either relaxing on the beach opposite or exploring the best of Dubai’s landmarks. There are two private balconies – one from the living area and one from the bedroom- that offer stunning views out towards the sea. Some 17 floors up, we enjoyed balmy evenings spent breathing in the otherworldly Dubai vista from our balcony – a sight to only be experienced first-hand. The en-suite gleams in white marble and features a separate bathtub and walk-in shower for every preference. Pastel blooms grace the sink area, adding a fragrant and aesthetically appeasing touch to the bathroom and showcasing Movenpick’s relentless attention to detail.
Another great thing about the Executive Suites is their access to the Executive Lounge. All Executive Rooms and Suites can enjoy access to the lounge where guests can enjoy benefits such as private breakfasts, light afternoon refreshments, evening drinks, canapes and even complimentary newspapers and business services. The lounge itself has an outside terrace for relaxing alfresco when the weather allows, boasting spectacular views of the iconic Palm Jumeirah. As guests of these Executive Suites, you’re entitled to return transfers from Dubai’s airports, pressing on arrival day for 2 garments and a dedicated area for check-in/check-out away from the masses. Not that there ever seems to be a queue in the Movenpick Jumeriah Beach, such is the efficiency of its staff.
Not only does the hotel have a superb location in the bustling beach district but it offers a wealth of leisure facilities in-house too. An elevated outdoor swimming pool, complete with enclosed cabanas and luxurious sunloungers is the perfect way to spend a sunny day. Yes, the beachfront views from the pool are are slightly blurred by ongoing construction works but show me a hotel that doesn’t fall victim to that in Dubai… You just have to sit back, relax and make the most of the fact that you’re part of the creation.
For those guests that would rather make the short walk to the sandy shores of the beach itself, a beach kit is available at the public beach counter which includes a towel, umbrella and beach mat.
On the subject of wellness, the hotel is also home to the Body Talk Wellness Centre and Spa with a fully-equipped gymnasium and tranquil treatment rooms designed to be a sanctuary of calm for guests and visitors alike. The varied spa menu includes an array of spa treatments that promote relaxation from deep tissue massages to reflexology.
Being located in such a vibrant area of Dubai means that you don’t need to look far when seeking a place to dine but it’s worth looking a little closer first because the Movenpick Jumeirah Beach itself offers five extremely worthy restaurants and lounges for you to choose from. The Talk restaurant is where the action happens throughout the day. With an enormous buffet that also transforms itself into an awarded Friday brunch ( a must-try for any Dubai visitor) and special theme nights, it’s the beating heart of this beautiful hotel.
For those looking for a little ‘soul’ food the Soul Restaurant & Bar located on the hotel’s second floor is a fantastic evening spot. With a funky, Manhattan-esque interior, this vivacious bar/lounge serves up vibrant flavours from its tempting menu for you to dine either indoors in air-conditioned bliss or al fresco under the twinkling lights of JBR. From mouth-watering comfort food offering a little taste of home (Braised Beef Short Ribs are our recommendation) to the extensive selection of world wines, the lively atmosphere here evokes New York’s sassy spirit and provides locals with a place to kickback and relax as the sun sinks beneath the horizon.
Somewhere we found ourselves on many an occasion whilst staying at the Movenpick was the Layali Pool Lounge. As the name suggests this outdoor spot sits alongside the picturesque swimming pool and offers live BBQ food, signature dishes, refreshing drinks and many different shisha flavours. Having enjoyed the quiet hospitality during the day it was a welcome surprise to visit come night fall and enjoy a laid back evening of live DJs and cocktails.
I think it would be very easy to pigeonhole Movenpick Jumeirah Beach as another convenient option when choosing a centrally located Dubai hotel but that would be doing it an injustice for it’s so much more than that. With a clean, modern interior and large, designer rooms, not to mention the wealth of facilities, this five-star property manages to perfectly blend renowned Swiss hospitality with Dubai’s vibrancy – it’s a hotel where you’ll be made more than comfortable for the duration of your stay but also where you’ll discover some of the aspects that make this emirate such an attractive tourist destination. To mirror the name of one of its restaurants – this is a hotel that has soul.
