As the new event season begins we couldn’t be happier with the abundance of restaurant and event launches, in fact it’s our favourite time of the year.
One event in particular crossed our path, the brand new Ladies’ Night at Trader Vic’s Mai Tai Lounge and never one to miss out, we popped along the launch to experience it for ourselves.
Trader Vic’s is the international island paradise that the world loves, with Polynesian themed restaurants and bars in destinations from London, America to Dubai, we’ve come to reserve a special place in our hearts for Trader Vic’s, happily sipping away on a potent Tiki Puka Puka and dancing through to the early hours to the live Latin bands.
The Mai Tai Lounge is the sister brand to Trader Vic’s which is located on the scenic waterways of the Madinat hotel. The Mai Tai Lounge is located conveniently along JBR in Al Fattan Tower which makes it an ideal ‘I’m just popping out for a cocktail’ venue. Even if you do end up coming home four hours later!
Most celebrated for its innovative tropical cocktails and of course, being home of the Original Mai Tai® many may forget that Trader Vic’s and the Mai Tai Lounge actually also offer a fabulous fusion food selection from Tibits to main courses.
Every Tuesday now sees Ladies’ of Dubai with a new place to go to get their weekly girly night out fix for the Mai Tai Lounge has launched ‘Luau Ladies’ Night’.
Steering clear of the unlimited drink tokens that invite a particular crowd, the Mai Tai Lounge is offering ladies a special menu which in my opinion is an absolute bargain! For just AED 90 you can enjoy a selection of 4x cocktails and tibits and the great thing is you can repeat purchase should you wish! The menu is wide enough to cater for everyone and if you don’t feel like eating simply select 4x cocktails which at the usual price of around AED 50 each means you are more than getting value for money! Favourites such as Rhum Cosmo, a refreshing concoction of rum and pineapple, sugar and fresh limes and the Zamboanga Punch, a rather lethal mix of light and dark rum, lime passion and bitters are offered. The famous Tiki Puka Puka is not on the menu but this is most probably a good thing!
If you fancy indulging in some fine fare than I highly recommend the tibits which make up the Ladies’ Night menu. Accompanying my beautifully named Tears of Tiki ( a spiced rum, orange liquor and pineapple juice delight) I opted for some Chicken Kasoori Skewers which came in a substantial 4x pieces marinated in ginger and yogurt, soaked in buttered methi and a delicious tomato sauce as well as my favourite Edamame a la plancha, a spicy twist of the Japanese edamame beans. Other stand out dishes include the jalapeno cheese balls which are another great vegetarian option and the crispy Tempura Calamari with fantastic wasabi aioli.
Now us girls love a bit of shopping and there was even a pop-up from cult fashion and accessories resort wear brand, Maarli. With ‘beach to bar’ fashion you’ll be sure to find something that your wardrobe just can’t do without.
As a Luau is a traditional Hawaiian fiesta, you can rightly expect some sort of entertainment and never one to disappoint Trader Vic’s Mai Tai Lounge delivers perfectly. From 9pm the live band, Salsa Express get your feet tapping and your hair swinging with their catchy Latin beats, it’s not an unusual sight to see the odd reveller dancing around. It’s pure, unpretentious fun, exactly what Trader Vic’s is all about.
To me, it felt like the Luau Ladies’ Night was something different in a sea of Ladies’ Night offerings in Dubai, it stayed true to the Trader Vic’s brand heritage to was an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city to a tropical paradise with good food, good cocktails and good entertainment. In fact, I’d go as far as saying it is the perfect Tiki oasis.
Will I go again? I can confidently say this is where you will find me most Tuesdays from now on.
